Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's volleyball team defeated Hollins in straight sets Friday night.
Ava Meinhardt led the way with seven kills offensively, an Morgan Clarke recorded a team-high 13 digs.
The Hornets cruised past Hollins in the first set with eight service aces and a .250 hitting percentage.
The Green & Gold put up more and more of a fight each set, but a five-point run early in the second set and a six-point run later in the middle set helped Lynchburg build enough of a buffer on its way to a 25-20 win. Seven different Hornets recorded a kill in the second set. Meinhardt led the way with three while Tiana Artese and Landon Spotts recorded two each.
Hollins had Lynchburg against the ropes in the third set building an 18-11 advantage. However, with Meinhardt at the service line, Lynchburg rallied for six-consecutive points to close the deficit. Princess Salifou helped put the Lynchburrg back in the driver's seat momentarily with three kills, but Hollins countered and earned set point at 24-23. A blocking error from the visitors kept Lynchburg afloat, and the Hornets responded with four of the next five points to seal the match.
Lynchburg (5-7, 2-4 ODAC) gets Washington and Lee in Turner Gymnasium on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 11 a.m.
