Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's volleyball team defeated Washington and Lee for the first time in seven years Saturday afternoon.
Bree Spainhour totaled 14 kills powered by a .325 hitting percentage as the Hornets handed Washington and Lee its first conference loss of the season.
After dropping the first set 25-17, the Hornets tied things up in the second with a 25-20 win. Abbey Barlow swung and landed a kill midway through the second set to put the Hornets up 16-12. The defensive specialist recorded a second kill on an overpass and also had seven digs.
The third set made Lynchburg's second-set victory look like a blip after the Generals downed the Hornets by 15. However, Keough landed six kills in the fourth set on her way to a team-high 15, and Lynchburg forced the tiebreaker set 25-21.
Washington and Lee led at the switch despite Spainhour putting down three kills for Lynchburg first three points. However, a five-point run from the Hornets had them in control late 12-9. The put-away scoring run featured a kill from Spainhour and two Lynchburg blocks.
Spainhour was in on one of those blocks and recorded seven kills in the final set. She also nailed the match shut with the final point on an assist from Jaina Leek. Leek did not start the match but finished with a team-high 24 assists.
Lynchburg beat Washington and Lee for only the fourth time and first since 2016. Washington and Lee won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship in 2022.
Lynchburg (6-7, 3-4 ODAC) visits Randolph next on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 6:30 p.m.
