Box Score Virginia Beach, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team downed Virginia Wesleyan 71-57 on Wednesday night.
Bree Spainhour led five Hornets in double-figures with 14. After falling under 10 points per game on Jan. 13, Spainhour is back to averaging 10.4 and leads the team for the season.
The Hornets trailed by five after the first quarter but nearly erased the deficit by halftime. A 3-pointer from Macey Mullins drew Lynchburg within three points with 3:23 to play in the first half, but the Marlins did just enough to hold off the Hornets at the midway point. Spainhour did make a layup on Lynchburg's final possession to make the score 32-30.
Spainhour, the sophomore forward, tied the game up with free throws just out of the intermission, but it wasn't until the fourth quarter until the Hornets started pulling away for good.
The Hornets held the Marlins to nine points, went 7-13 (53.8%) from the floor, and made both their 3-pointers in the final quarter. Sayre Brandstatter scored seven of her 10 points in the last period as well.
The Hornets grabbed 49 rebounds in the win and are averaging 47.6 boards per game in their last five contests.
Lynchburg (11-8, 6-5 ODAC) has the weekend off before hosting No. 23-ranked Washington and Lee on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m.
