Danville, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer squad grabbed an early lead and held on to oust Averett in the team's third shutout victory of the season, 2-0, on Wednesday night on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
The Hornets (4-2-2, 2-1-0) started off hot as fifth year
Zach Whelan netted his first goal of the season in the seventh minute off a delivery from fellow fifth year
Kenny Robles. Lynchburg stayed in front the rest of the way with a miz of stout defense and persistent offense. Throughout the first 45 minutes, the Hornets peppered the cage with nine shots, including four on frame. The latter half of the match saw plenty of offensive production for Lynchburg as well with eight shots and four more on goal.
Following the halftime break, sophomore
Chris Wiley was issued a red card in the 50th minute, leaving Lynchburg with ten men for the remainder of the contest. Being shorthanded did not stop the Hornets from buzzing as graduate
Manzi Shalita dished a ball to senior Pat Fiagro, who buried one past the keeper in the 67th minute to extend the visiting Lynchburg squad's advantage. The Hornets held onto their two-goal edge for the remainder of the affair.
Junior
Thomas Viscuso stood between the pipes for Lynchburg and stopped three shots, earning his fourth clean sheet of the season. Whelan paced the Hornets offensively with three total shots in the contest, two of which were fired inside the woodwork.
Next up on the slate for the men's soccer squad is a bout with Randolph-Macon on the home turf. The Hornets welcome the Yellow Jackets to Shellenberger Field on Saturday, October 5 at 7 p.m.
