Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer squad earned its second consecutive shutout and fifth of the season on its way to victory over Randolph-Macon on Saturday night at Shellenberger Field.
The Hornets (5-2-2, 3-1-0) saw fifth year
Zach Whelan net his second goal in as many games in the 26th minute to give the home squad the lead for good. After freshman
William Casey dished it to Whelan at the top of the box, the 2023 ODAC Tournament Most-Outstanding-Player turned and fired a heater past the keeper into the bottom left corner to put the Hornets on the board. With 10 seconds to go before the final whistle, Randolph-Macon took down graduate
Manzi Shalita inside the box and awarded the Hornets a penalty kick, which Shalita finished to secure the win.
Throughout the entire contest, the stout Lynchburg defense allowed just three shots from the Yellow Jackets. Although Lynchburg held its ODAC foe without much offensive production, the Hornets created plenty of dangerous chances themselves, firing off 14 shots throughout the affair and four between the pipes. Five different Lynchburg players finished with multiple shots, but Shalita paced the offense with three in the contest.
The Hornets have won five of their last six outings and currently sit at third place in the ODAC table. As a squad, Lynchburg is second in the conference in goals allowed this season with six, three of which came against ODAC opponents. The Hornets conceded two against Averett and one versus Roanoke.
Next up on the slate for Lynchburg is a home bout against the Randolph Wildcats on Wednesday, October 9 at 7 p.m.
