Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team took down the Hampden-Sydney Tigers with two back-to-back stingers in the first half, earning a 2-0 victory on Wednesday night at Shellenberger Field.Â
The Hornets (8-2-4, 6-1-2) stay unbeaten in the month of October with tonight's solid all-around performance, a streak that spans across seven games. Through this stretch of contests, Lynchburg has outscored its opponents by a margin of 10-1, with the lone conceded goal coming against No. 20 Washington and Lee last weekend. The Hornets are the only team left in the ODAC that have a single-digit in the goals allowed statistical category this season with seven in 14 games.Â
Lynchburg scored both of its goals within four minutes of each other. The first of which came off a corner from fifth year
Kenny Robles, who fired it into the box to freshman
William Casey, who controlled the rock and buried it past the keeper to give the Hornets the edge in the 25th minute. At the 28:43-mark, graduate
Manzi Shalita delivered a cross to graduate
Zach Whelan, who nodded the ball with force into the back of the net, extending the Lynchburg lead to two.Â
After the home squad took a comfortable lead, the Hornets played the possession game, controlling the ball for a good majority of the remaining time on the clock. Though Lynchburg had control of the ball, the team continued to find offensive opportunities up the sideline. The Hornets fired off seven shots in each half of the affair, totaling 14 throughout the 90 minutes while holding Hampden-Sydney to three shots all outing.Â
The Hornets host their final regular season match of the season when they welcome Christopher Newport to Shellenberger Field on Saturday, October 26 at 7 p.m.
