Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team battled back-and-forth against Christopher Newport in what resulted as a 2-1 triumph for the Hornets on Saturday night at Shellenberger Field.
The Hornets (9-2-4) honored their seniors justly with a hard-fought victory tonight. In the 10th minute of the contest, senior
Trevor Miller put the first point on the board as fellow senior
Pat Figaro found him inside the box on a cross. Lynchburg held CNU to just two shots in the first 45 minutes and rode the one-goal advantage into the second half.
In the 58th minute, the Captains were awarded a penalty shot and Mason Field capitalized, effectively equalizing the score. Tempers flared and aggression was displayed for the remainder of the competition. With just over 12 minutes left on the clock, graduate
Manzi Shalita breezed past his defender and fired it into the bottom left corner. The entire Lynchburg bench stormed to the corner of the field to celebrate as the Hornets took the edge and kept it through the final whistle.
Lynchburg extended its unbeaten streak to eight consecutive games with tonight's win. Throughout that span, the Hornets have won six affairs and drawn twice.
Seniors
Cesar Acosta,
Alex Derstine, Carl Haire, Figaro and Miller were all honored in a pregame ceremony that set the tone for the evening. Lynchburg's next outing will be its final of the regular season. The Hornets travel to Shenandoah on Wednesday, October 30 at 7 p.m. to close out the regular season.Â
