Men's Soccer Earns Third Straight Shutout Win

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer squad claimed its third consecutive shutout victory by taking down the Randolph Wildcats in a 2-0 triumph on Wednesday night at Shellenberger Field.

The Hornets (6-2-2, 4-1-0) got their sixth win in the last seven contests with tonight's result. The home team took the lead in the 17th minute when freshman William Casey struck through his first career goal. Junior Benjamin Velasquez toss in a ball from the sideline into the box, which then pinballed around before falling to the feet of Casey, who fired it with force into the bottom corner.

Lynchburg held onto the lead for the remainder of the contest, creating plenty of offensive opportunities along the way. Throughout the affair, the Hornets let off 13 shots, including five on goal. Seven of those came in the first half and six in the final 45 minutes. With 5:20 to go, fifth year Kenny Robles intercepted a pass in the attacking half, made a move past a defender and booted a ball from over 20 yards out past the keeper into the bottom right corner, effectively sealing the victory for the Hornets.

Following tonight's win, Lynchburg sits at second place in the ODAC table with 12 conference points. The stout defense has been a significant contributor to the men's soccer crew's success in conference play, the Hornets trail only Virginia Wesleyan in goals allowed with six in ten games for an average of 0.60 goals allowed per outing.

The men's soccer team returns to the pitch on Saturday, October 12 when they take on Eastern Mennonite in Harrisonburg, Va. at 6 p.m.
