Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's soccer team scored an equalizer in the last 20 minutes of action to draw against Roanoke on Saturday evening at Shellenberger Field.
In their second ODAC matchup of the season, the Hornets (4-4-2, 1-0-1) trailed by one after Roanoke senior MC Petrucelli netted one off a cross from sophomore Rebecca Carr in the 26th minute. The Maroons fired off three more shots on goal in the first half, but they were all stopped by Lynchburg's senior goalkeeper
Meredith Bowers, who finished the outing with five saves.Â
The Hornets picked up the pace in the second half, firing off more than double the amount of shots they had in the first half. The home squad created plenty of dangerous opportunities in the last 45 minutes, but it was freshman
Sammie Rogstad's floater of a free kick that drifted above Roanoke keeper Grace Suchy's head and hit the top bins in the 70th minute.
Rogstad's sensational goal juiced up the Hornets squad. Lynchburg fired off seven more shots following the goal, including a rocket from senior
Ella Tampio-Iorns that reverberated the woodwork. The Hornets unfortunately were unable to convert any of their threatening shots and the sides ended the contest with a 1-1 draw.Â
Both netminders made significant stops throughout the affair. Bowers finished up with five saves and Suchy concluded with six. Offensively, the Hornets were paced by Tampio-Iorns with five total shots and two on frame in just 44 minutes of action.
The women's soccer crew continues conference play with a matchup at Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday, October 8 at 6 p.m.
