No. 24 Men's Soccer Scores Three To Advance To NCAA Second Round

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team will keep dancing in the NCAA second round following a 3-0 triumph over the Emory Eagles on Saturday evening at Shellenberger Field.

The Hornets scored three goals in the affair, including two in the final six minutes, and shutout the Eagles in a stellar performance across the board. Freshman and reigning ODAC Rookie of the Year William Casey got the first goal of the contest in the 38th minute with a header following a corner taken by graduate Manzi Shalita. For the entirety of the first half, Lynchburg held Emory to just one shot and owned a one goal edge heading into the halftime intermission.

Both sides kicked it up a notch on the offensive end in the second half. The Eagles added four shots in the final 45 minutes while the Hornets tallied eight over that span. In the 84th minute, sophomore Ayden Cass sent a long ball down the side to freshman Kohlby Wilson, who pushed it across the box to a wide open Shalita for the game-sealing goal. With just under two minutes to go, Cass found Wilson again for the final goal of the match, this time it was netted by Wilson.

Shalita has been the offensive enforcer for the Hornets as of late, scoring a goal in five of the team's last six games. Cass's two assists were a career-high, while Wilson scored his first goal and tallied his first assist of his collegiate career.

Netminders on each end made terrific stops in the second half, each tallying three saves. Junior goalkeeper Thomas Viscuso earned his 12 shutout of the season and 10th shutout victory, totaling three stops in the outing. Emory goalie Sharan Dodwani made four saves throughout the competition.

Lynchburg is still dancing and earns one more day on the field together. The Hornets return to action for the NCAA second round tomorrow, Sunday, November 17 at 3 p.m. for a bout against No. 6 Dickinson. Tickets for tomorrow's matchup can be purchased by clicking here.
