Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team had their 2024 season come to a close in the NCAA second round with a loss to Dickinson, 2-0, on Sunday evening at Shellenberger Field.
The No. 24 Hornets secured a spot in the NCAA tournament for the fourth consecutive season, but could not get it done against a strong No. 6 Dickinson team. Lynchburg won its first round matchup against Emory, avenging its loss to the Eagles earlier in the season, and winning its first NCAA tournament contest since 2017.Â
In the 23rd minute, Dickinson's leading scorer Saul Iwowo got a touch on a scrum in front of the goal frame and was able to put it past the goal line for the Red Devils' first score. Johnny Diederich extended the Dickinson lead in the 59th minute and effectively sealed the Red Devils' victory.Â
The first half was a defensive battle as Iwowo's goal was the only shot in the first 45 minutes from either tam. Lynchburg came out of the locker room in the second half with an offensive mindset, firing off eight shots in the ending 45 minutes of action. Although the Hornets had more chances on the offensive end, they were unable to capitalize on their opportunities against a tenacious Red Devils defense.
Lynchburg's incredible campaign concludes with today's loss. The Hornets fortunately return everyone on the starting defensive unit for next season, however they lose key starters on the other side of the ball including
Manzi Shalita,
Zach Whelan and
Kenny Robles. Still, there is much to look forward to with many young players having significant contributions this season, highlighted by
William Casey, the ODAC Rookie of the Year, and
Kohlby Wilson, who tallied a goal and assist in yesterday's NCAA first round win over Emory.
