Hornets Return Home to Host Methodist

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's basketball team is gearing up for its third contest in a four-day stretch when Methodist visits Turner Gym on Tuesday, November 26 at 5 p.m.

The Hornets (2-2) return to the home court for their last competition of November, just before Thanksgiving. This past weekend, Lynchburg competed at the Pablo Coto Tournament, hosted by Marymount, and split their two games. After falling to Amherst on Saturday, the Hornets propelled themselves to an overtime victory against Dickinson, 82-75.

Lynchburg outscored the Red Devils 34-17 in the second half to continue into an extra period. In overtime, the Hornets strung together an 8-1 run to begin the period and held onto the advantage for the remainder of the contest. In the five-minute overtime period, freshman forward Jamarcus Brown scored eight points of Lynchburg's 18 en rout to the victory. Brown tied with junior forward Jayson Easton for the most points of the outing with 18 apiece.

Through four games this season, the Hornets have three performers averaging double-digit points: junior guard Piercen Young (14.3 points per game), Brown (12.3 ppg.) and Easton (10.8 ppg.). Young also leads the squad in assists with 22 for an average of 5.5 per affair. Senior forward Mason Makovec is atop the squad in rebounds per game with 7.0. Sophomore guard Jake Hart averages 2.0 steals per game and has swiped at least one in each competition so far this season.

Since 1991, Lynchburg owns a 10-4 record in the series against Methodist. Each of the last five outings have all been won by the Hornets, most recently on Nov. 21, 2023 with an 81-58 final score. In all five of those games, Lynchburg has scored 78-or-more points. The Monarchs have started the season with the same record as the Hornets, 2-2. Their last matchup resulted in an 86-72 victory against Regent last Wednesday.

Methodist are led offensively by juniors Derrion Hicklen, a guard, and forward Ke Edwards. Hicklen averages a staggering 19.7 points per game and scored 28 points in the Monarchs' win over Regent. Although Edwards has only participated in the last two contests, he has combined for 31 points and 14 rebounds across those two games.

Following tomorrow's matchup, Lynchburg will welcome Newport News Apprentice School to Turner Gym to start the final month of the year. The Builders and Hornets will square up on the hardwood on Sunday, December 1, at 4:30 p.m.
