Winchester, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team squared up against the Shenandoah Hornets in the ODAC championship title game and fell, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at Aikens Stadium.
The No. 13 Lynchburg Hornets battled with tenacity for revenge after dropping the regular season meeting against No. 9 Shenandoah, but ultimately could not claim victory. Lynchburg ceded the first goal of the contest at the 9:33-mark to Claudia Lenahan. With 3:07 left in the second period, Lynchburg equalized the score after sophomore
Anna Dorrestijn found
Olivia van Metre for Lynchburg's sole goal of the game.Â
Shenandoah grabbed the lead for good at the 35:14-mark following a goal from Elizabeth Ranberger. The home team extended its lead to two with just under ten minutes to go after a score from Mairead McKibbin. In the ending minutes of the final period, Lynchburg was down a player due to a yellow card and pulled the goalie in a comeback attempt, which allowed Shenandoah to add one more to the scoreboard by the hands of Kaitlyn Nakamura.
SophomoresÂ
Khanyisile Mzizi,
Shay Schoones, and senior
Madison Mark were all named to the ODAC All-Tournament team. Although Lynchburg fell in the conference title game, the Hornets' season is likely to continue in the NCAA DIII tournament. The team selections will be announced at 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 10.
