Lynchburg, Va. -- In a heavyweight battle of two nationally ranked squads, the University of Lynchburg men's soccer team lost to Washington and Lee, 1-0, in the ODAC championship game on Saturday night at Shellenberger Field.
The No. 24 Hornets fought throughout the entire 90 minutes, effectively defending an elite offensive team and creating offensive opportunities, but ultimately fell short. In the 52nd minute, No. 21 Washington and Lee put pressure on the goal and Spencer Furman was able to put it into the back of the net for the game's lone goal.
Lynchburg held a potent offense to just three shots all contest and fired off eight of its own. Graduate
Manzi Shalita, senior
Pat Figaro, and a few other Hornet performers had dangerous opportunities on the offensive end, but Lynchburg was unable to convert its chances.
The Hornets saw Shalita, junior
Benjamin Velasquez, and freshman
William Casey earn honors on the ODAC All-Tournament Team. Defenders Velasquez and Casey headlined a fantastic backline that performed at the top of the conference and Division III all year.
The Lynchburg men's soccer squad is likely to earn a spot in the NCAA DIII tournament. The team selections for the tournament will be announce on Monday, November 11 at 2 p.m.
