Rustburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg equestrian team defeated Sacred Heart 8-1 in National Collegiate Equestrian Association competition on Saturday morning.
The Hornets came into the meet ranked second in the NCEA, and Sacred Heart carried a No. 4 ranking. However, the Hornets jumped all over the Pioneers early in the meet. The Hornets built a 4-1 lead over fences led by the most-outstanding performer, Fallyn Belcastro. She had the highest score of the day for Lynchburg with an 86 while riding Dream. Brynley Smith and Jacqueline Needle also scored in the 80s while riding Kevin and HD, respectively. Smith scored an 85, and Needle received an 82.
The Hornets didn't concede a point on the flat as Lucy Metzler, Devyn Borden, Abigail Zemp, and Belcastro earned points to seal the 8-1 win. Kelley McCormick tied her opponent on Rolo with a 73. Metzler was the most-outstanding-performer and was the defending ODAC rider of the week on the flat from last week's meet against Charleston.
The Hornets (5-2) host Berry on Friday, March 1 at 2 p.m. That will be Lynchburg's final, regular-season NCEA meet of the year before heading to Sweet Briar for the first iteration of the ODAC championship. The ODAC will also host a traditional ODAC championship on Saturday, April 13.
