Rustburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg equestrian team defeated Charleston 8-2 in National Collegiate Equestrian Association competition on Friday afternoon.
Lynchburg hadn't squared off in an NCEA meet since downing Sewanee at home on Nov. 11 last semester, but Lynchburg's first rider over fences, Fallyn Belcastro, showed no signs of the long layoff and posted an 85. Three more of Belcastro's teammates scored in the 80s during the fences session. Brynley Smith scored an 87 and earned most-outstanding-performer honors. It was Smith's second 87 over fences on the season and the fifth 87 for the Hornets all-time over fences in program history.
After going up 4-1 after fences, the Hornets doubled up their score on the flat with four more points. Devyn Borden, Fallyn Belcastro, Lucy Metzler, and Abby Zemp scored for Lynchburg on the flat with Metzler leading the way with a 90. Metzler's 90 is the fourth score 90 or above on the flat in program history. Charleston stole a point on the flat with a 91 from Caroline Berg to beat out Kelley McCormick's 82.
Lynchburg (4-2) hosts Sacred Heart on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 10 a.m. Lynchburg is the No. 2-ranked team in the NCEA, and Sacred Heart is ranked fourth.
