Sweet Briar, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg equestrian team won the first-ever Old Dominion Athletic Conference head-to-head riding championship defeating No. 1 Sweet Briar 7-3 Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets stormed out to a 4-1 lead through fences and secured three additional points on the flat to garner the conference title over the Vixens. With the victory, Lynchburg now holds the No. 1 rank nationally for NCEA single discipline heading into the national championship competition. The single discipline championship will take place at the World Equestrian Center in Ocala, Fla. from April 18-20.
The first four points of the day over fences were taken by the Hornets. Emma Schweizer led the scoring streak with an average score of 87. Brynley Smith scored a 78, Fallyn Belcastro received an 83.5, and Mackenna Moss rounded the scoring out with an 86. Belcastro received MOP honors over fences.
Lynchburg carried their momentum onto the flat where they stole three more points to reach their final tally of seven. Belcastro stung first riding to a score of 86 to earn her second point the meet. Kelley McCormick received the meet-high score of 92.5 earning herself MOP on the flat. Lucy Metzler took the seventh and final point for the Hornets with a score of 81.
Along with the victory, Lynchburg riders combined for four of the eight all-tournament team honors. Schweizer over fences, McCormick on the flat, and Belcastro received all-tournament team for both the flat and fences.
The Hornets next meet will be the traditional ODAC championship hosted at Hollins University on Saturday, April 13th.
