Newport News, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team fell to Christopher Newport 11-9 on Saturday night.
The Hornets held a lead into the fourth quarter, but the No. 6 Captains overtook the Hornets with six goals in the fourth quarter.
Dylan Wolfe and Jake Rust were the leading point scorers with two goals and an assist each. Riley Hastings had a team-high two assists tallying his helpers on goals from Brodie Mason and Spencer Vandenberg. Six Hornets scored goals, and along with Rust and Wolfe, Finn Schmidt also scored twice.
While CNU struck first, the Hornets scored three straight goals and took a 3-1 lead into the second.
Lynchburg and CNU went blow for blow for the next 30 minutes as both teams scored two goals per period in the second and third.
The Hornets and Captains continued that dance into the fourth. CNU scored first in the fourth, but Wolfe answered back and had the Hornets up by two with 11:46 to play.
The Captains flipped the script with a four-goal run and went up two just over five minutes after Wolfe's score.
Rust scored with 2:54 to play, cutting the lead momentarily to one, but the Captains had the final answer. Lynchburg only got off one final shot with 14 seconds left after facing the final two-goal deficit that would last through the final buzzer.
Lynchburg (3-4, 1-0 ODAC) stays local on Sunday, March 24 and plays Virginia Wesleyan in its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference game of the year at 2 p.m.
