Virginia Beach, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team got contributions from 11 goal scorers including six freshmen in a 16-4 victory over Virginia Wesleyan Sunday afternoon in the team's Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener.
The 13th-ranked Hornets rebounded from an 11-9 loss at No. 6 Christopher Newport Saturday night by improving to 25-0 in the all-time series against Virginia Wesleyan just a day later.
The offensive output marked the fourth time this season that Lynchburg has reached 15 goals. With the win, Lynchburg improved to 3-1 when hitting that benchmark.
Riley Hastings set the tone by scoring a point on each of the first three goals. He scored the first and third and assisted on Brodie Mason's goal. Lynchburg recorded a season-high 13 assists.
Lynchburg scored the game's first nine goals, all in the first quarter en route to a 9-1 advantage after 15 minutes. Dylan Wolfe chipped in two goals to match Hastings' two during that stretch.
Lynchburg kicked off the second quarter with Kayden Hinchey's second goal of the day before rattling off another string of five-straight goals to set the lead at a game-high 15-2 margin with 10:00 left in the third quarter.
Charlie Evans scored all three goals of his hat trick as part of that 5-0 run. Evans led four Hornets with multiple goals while Hastings led the way with four points in total off two goals and two assists.
Riley Frankel scooped up a team-best seven ground balls as part of his 5-9 performance at the faceoff X. Six different players stood in for a faceoff for Lynchburg and they combined to go 17-24 (70.8%) at midfield.
In addition to winning the faceoff battle, the Hornets collected 11 more ground balls than the Marlins and were more efficient on the clear at 18-21 (85.7%).Â
The Hornets did commit 22 turnovers to match their counterparts: the second-most this season. They also posted an 0-4 mark on extra man opportunities, the first occasion this season that Lynchburg did not record a man-up goal.
Although Tyler Hadley got the start, Andrew Miller led the way with seven saves as all four of Lynchburg's goalkeepers saw game action for the second time this season. All but Hadley made a save.
Lynchburg will travel to the University of Pennsylvania to face No. 12 Amherst Saturday, March 30 before fully diving into the conference slate against Guilford on April 3.
