Philadelphia, Pa. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team defeated Amherst 15-13 on Saturday.
The No. 16 Hornets met No. 10 Amherst on a neutral site, Franklin Field, midway between the teams' campuses. In the first meeting between the two schools since 2017, the Hornets got five points from Riley Mitchell and five points from Dylan Wolfe. Tyler Hadley also made 13 saves on 26 shots.Â
While the Mammoths scored the first two goals of the game, a six-goal run had Lynchburg up 6-2 midway through the second quarter. Wolfe scored twice on the run, Mitchell scored the final goal of the run, and Wolfe assisted it.Â
A four-goal run in the third quarter with scores from Spencer Vandenberg, Finn Schmidt, and two from Riley Hastings had Lynchburg more than doubling up the Mammoths with 22 minutes left in the game.Â
Lynchburg led by six entering the fourth quarter and that lead held after the teams traded goals through the early goings of the final period. Vandenberg's second goal of the game assisted by Jake Rust marked the last time the Hornets found the back of the net though. Amherst ripped off four unanswered goals but ran out of time after cutting the deficit to two with 30 seconds left. Riley Frankel won the ensuing faceoff, and even though the Hornets turned the ball over after Frankel's eighth faceoff win, the Mammoths only had time for one more off-target shot.Â
Frankel won 80% of his faceoffs and won all three of his duels in the fourth quarter. Hadley and Kylar Mahoney each forced two turnovers leading the Lynchburg defense that forced 11 total and stopped three Amherst clears.Â
The Hornets (5-4) host Guilford on Wednesday, April 3 at 7 p.m.
