No. 21 baseball sweeps Averett at home

Lynchburg,Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team took down conference opponent Averett University in an ODAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon by a score of 18-3 in Game 1, and 14-0 in Game 2.

Graduate student Wesley Arrington made his ninth start of the season on the mound for the Hornets and dominated the Averett lineup tallying his career-high 13 strikeouts. The Keswick native allowed two runs in seven innings of works pitching his way to his fourth win of the season. 

The Lynchburg office backed up Arrington scoring 18 runs on 20 hits, highlighted by Benton Jones electric day at the plate. The sophomore recorded an outstanding eight RBI on five hits, scoring three runs. Jones punctuated the impressive performance in the bottom of the 8th with a two RBI homer over the right-field wall, good for his third of the season.

The two transfer-additions for the Hornets Quinn Madden and O'Kelly McWilliams IV combined for six hits and five runs in the win. Freshman Joe Munitz also continued his offensive production driving in three RBI on two hits, scoring two runs.

Jack Bachmore closed out Game 1 in his third appearance of the year and the Hornets won 18-3.

In Game 2, Lynchburg continued to dominate the Cougars on both sides of the field. Nick Mattfield matched his season-high seven innings sitting down seven Cougars in the shutout performance. Mattfield earned his fourth win of the season improving his record to 4-2.

Joe Munitz sparked a five-run 5th inning for the Hornets with an RBI single driving in Gavin Collins. Logan Webster and Brandon Garcia traded spots with back-to-back doubles making the score 8-0 going into the 6th.

Garcia cleared the bases with another two-bagger in the 8th inning making the score 13-0. Between the two contests, the sophomore-shortstop recorded six RBI on five hits, scoring four runs. 

As a team, Lynchburg scored 14 runs on 14 hits in Game 2 winning the contest 14-0. Logan Tapman rounded out the afternoon on the bump with two scoreless innings.

The Hornets (20-11, 12-6 ODAC) are ranked 21st in the d3baseball.com poll and host Pfeiffer Wednesday, February 28 at 3:30 p.m.
