Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team defeated St. Mary's (Md.) 18-6 on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets already had the No. 2 seed in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament when the game started, and they will host the winner of Roanoke's quarterfinal on Shellenberger Field Thursday, May 2. Roanoke will play the winner of Guilford and Shenandoah on Tuesday.
The last time Lynchburg played St. Mary's (Md.), the first half was lopsided, but the Seahawks put up a fight in the second half. Saturday's matchup was the opposite as Lynchburg and St. Mary's (Md.) were knotted up 3-3 early in the second.
Spencer Vandenberg broke the tie with a quick finish in front of the net on a pass from Jake Rust, and the Hornets held the lead the rest of the way. Vandenberg's foal opened a five-goal run that lasted late into the second. Grant Voigt, Cole Oprandi, Dylan Wolfe, and Brodie Mason all scored during the run. Wolfe and Rust scored two more goals after a Seahawks response to close out the first half.
Rust scored three goals in the game and notched his 40th goal of the season early in the third. He is the first Hornets to score 40 goals since 2022 when Ryan Kenney scored 66, and Riley Mitchell scored 40.
Darren Palma caused three turnovers, Finn Schmidt had four ground balls, Michael Kraus won 10 faceoffs, and Tyler Hadley made eight saves as the Hornets took down the Seahawks. Lynchburg has not lost to the Seahawks since at least 1999.
