Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team defeated Roanoke 12-6 on Thursday to advance to the team's 10th Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship in a row.
The Hornets hosts Randolph-Macon at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 4 after the yellow Jackets upset top-seeded Washington and Lee on the other side of the bracket. Lynchburg will be playing for its 10th title in program history while the Randolph-Macon is playing in its first championship game.
Spencer Vandenberg opened the scoring for the Hornets with a goal assisted by Riley Mitchell four minutes into the game. While Roanoke answered back four minutes later, it was one of only three goals for the Maroons in the first half.
Jake Rust tallied a hat trick by halftime, and Dylan Wolfe had a goal and three assists by halftime. Both players scored another goal in the second half as the Hornets closed out their 10 straight semifinal win.
Roanoke went scoreless in the third quarter, and while the Maroons outscored Lynchburg 3-2 in the fourth quarter, Lynchburg's defense throughout the game was enough to secure the victory. In particular, Tyler Hadley made 15 saves on 20 shots faced, six players caused turnovers including two from Steve Ulrichs, and the Hornets held Roanoke's leading scorer Luke Kammerman without a goal for only the second time this season. He came into the game with 44 goals and 41 assists.
