Tysons Corner, Va. -- University of Lynchburg baseball junior Quinn Madden homered twice, including a go-ahead home run in the ninth, during the Lynchburg baseball team's 7-6 win over Roanoke on Friday in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament.
After the win on Thursday as well, the Hornets advanced to the final series of the championship. They will play the winner of Roanoke and Shenandoah on Saturday, May 11, but the time is to be determined. Roanoke and Shenandoah play Saturday at 10 a.m. If the championship series goes two games, the second game will be played Sunday, May 12, also at a time to be determined.
The Hornets got off to a 6-0 lead in the second inning beginning with a two-run single from Joe Munitz. After run-scoring hits from Brandon Garcia and Benton Jones, Madden capped off the big inning with his first dinger of the day.
Nick Mattfield gave Lynchburg 3 2/3 innings of work as the starter but his final line included four runs on two hits after being relieved by Mason McDowell.
Roanoke later tied up the game with two runs in the seventh, but Madden's second homer of the day sealed the deal for Lynchburg in the top of the ninth.
Colin McGuire, who entered in the eighth, was actually the one to put the finishing touches on the game as he retired all four of the batters he faced.
Lynchburg will seek its 11th ODAC championship and first back-to-back crown since winning five straight from 1980-1984.
