Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team fell to Washington and Lee 16-13 in the third round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.
Lynchburg advanced to the third round for the second year in a row after defeating Pfeiffer by 16 on Saturday. Lynchburg's all-time record in the NCAA championship tournament is 16-17 (.485). The Hornets made the NCAA Tournament for the 12th straight season and 17th time overall after defeating Randolph-Macon in the ODAC championship on May 4, claiming the program's 10th conference title.
Lynchburg earned the first lead of the game off a Riley Mitchell goal 1:22 into the game and on Lynchburg's first possession. W&L won the first faceoff of the game, but James Haley could not convert thanks to a save by Tyler Hadley. However, those two factors for the Generals (Tyler Spano's .700 (21-30) winning percentage at the X and Haley's four goals) proved to be a big difference in the game. Haley scored his first goal of the day to cap off the first quarter which had W&L up 4-2.
Riley Hastings' 40th goal of the season and a last-second goal from Jake Rust pulled Lynchburg within one by the end of the first half. Lynchburg took the lead out of halftime after back-to-back scores from Dylan Wolfe.
The two sides traded blows to close out the third, and Washington and Lee scored with fractions of a second left in the third quarter to retie the game 11-11.
While Liam Holman did score to start the fourth and give Lynchburg a one-goal lead, the Generals outscored Lynchburg 5-2 in the final quarter including three goals in the final three minutes to secure the win.
Neither team scored on five combined man-up chances, Tyler Hadley made 12 saves, and Lynchburg took better care of the ball than W&L with 12 turnovers to the Generals' 17. Dom Zingo, Cole Zacharias, and Henri Marindin all caused two turnovers each.
The Hornets won 15 games for the third straight season, and head coach Steve Koudelka surpassed 350 wins as the coach of the Hornets during the season.
