Eastlake, Ohio -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team was eliminated from the NCAA 2024 Division III baseball championship by Misericordia University on Monday.

The Cougars won 3-2 in the first game of the day and ended Lynchburg's season with a 5-1 decision Monday evening. The Hornets ended the year with 37 wins, a second consecutive conference championship, and back-to-back NCAA regional and super regional victories. The Lynchburg baseball senior class of 2024 wraps up its four years in the Hill City with 157 wins, three conference championships, a national title, and four consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

The Hornets received two really impressive pitching performances from a pair of relievers making starts. Colin McGuire started the first game of the day and pitched a career-high 7 2/3 innings with eight hits and two earned runs. Logan Tapman made his second start of the year in the second game going 6 2/3 with three hits and three runs.

The Hornets took the lead in McGuire's start during the third inning on RBI from Sean Pokorak and Eric Hiett. However, the Cougars tied the game in the eighth and took a lead in the ninth. Benton Jones doubled in the bottom of the frame, and Quinn Madden walked, but the Hornets didn't pull off a walk-off victory.

Lynchburg never led in the second game and scored its only run of the game in the fifth when Madden brought home Brandon Garcia on a sacrifice fly. The Cougars broke a 1-1 tie with four runs over two of the last three innings to secure the victory and secure the program's first appearance in the NCAA championship series.
