Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team battled through the rainy conditions to a 2-1 victory over the Roanoke Maroons on Wednesday night at Shellenberger Field for the squad's Code Red contest.
The Hornets (3-1-2, 1-0-0) netted the first goal of the game in the 18th minute as forward
Evan Pask buried his first goal of the season. Defender and captain
Benjamin Velasquez booted a ball down the sideline with force right into forward
Manzi Shalita's possession. Shalita took it in stride towards the side of the box and delivered a cross to a wide open
Evan Pask, who struck it past the keeper with ease. Neither side converted a shot for the remainder of the first half and the squad's went into the halftime intermission with a Lynchburg edge, 1-0.
In the 56th minute, midfielder Slate Danforth made a couple moves at the top of the box and found enough space to score the equalizer. 11 minutes later, defender
Ayden Cass found space to receive a pass inside the box but was fouled by defender Brian Manon, giving the Hornets a penalty chance. Forward
Kenny Robles decisively fired a shot past goaltender Luca Gustafson into the bottom right corner of the net and gave Lynchburg the lead for good.
The intensity elevated consistently throughout the competition until the final whistle. The two sides came out with two yellow cards a piece, and in the final minute of play, forward Girom Affolter slid into netminder
Thomas Viscuso and was given a red card for serious foul play. Both of keepers made some crucial stops throughout the affair, each stopping four shots.
Following its triumph in the first ODAC matchup of the season, Lynchburg takes its three-game winning streak on the road to Virginia Beach for an outing against Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, Septmeber 28 at 4:30 p.m.
