Fredericksburg, Va. - The Lynchburg Hornets were back on the road today for a doubleheader, facing #24 Mary Washington and Gettysburg.
In their first contest, Lynchburg would fall in four sets, 3-1, to the Eagles.
The first set was a tight contest between the two programs, trading blows with seven total lead changes. However, once the Eagles took a 14-13, they controlled the rest of the way, winning 25-22.
In the second frame, Lynchburg seemed to have a comfortable lead, up 20-13. But a 9-0 run from the Eagles gave them their first advantage of the set, and ultimately a 25-23 victory.
Down 0-2, the Hornets were able to find some momentum in the third frame. Leah DiNardo would lead the team with four kills during the third, as the Hornets would go on to claim their first set of the day 25-20.
Nonetheless, the fourth set was handily controlled by the Eagles. Mary Washington would go on to win the final frame 25-16 on the home floor.
Right after, Lynchburg retook the floor for a date with Gettysburg. The Hornets and Bullets would go on to play five frames, but Gettysburg would prevail, 3-2.
The Bullets came out firing, winning the first set 25-15. In the second frame, Jaina Leek and Kyrie Thibodeau did a phenomenal job setting their teammates up for success, combining for 13 assists. Lynchburg would take the second set 25-23.
Knotted at one set a piece, Lynchburg continued to find their rhythm. The Hornets jumped out to a 12-5 lead early and would cruise to a 25-14 win.
But the Bullets quickly changed the match's complexion with a dominant 25-10 win in the fourth set. In the fifth set, the teams were locked at 8-8, but a 7-4 run from Gettysburg led to their 3-2 victory.
The Hornets fall to 4-3 overall, with their first conference game this Wednesday. The Hornets will host Randolph-Macon on Sept. 11 for the year's first "Code Red" matchup.
