Hornets Hit The Hardwood Against Maroons

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team is set to welcome Roanoke to Turner Gym for a midweek matchup on Wednesday, January 29 at 7 p.m.

The Hornets (6-10, 3-6) head into tomorrow's contest on a four-game skid. Their most recent outing resulted in a loss to the Bridgewater Eagles, who are receiving votes in the national top 25 poll. Lynchburg looks to snap its streak with a victory against a Roanoke side that is 4-5 in the conference and sits at ninth in the ODAC standings.

Since 1996, the Hornets trail in the series against the Maroons, 35-18. Each of the last three meetings between the two squads have gone Roanoke's way, most recently on Nov. 29, 2023 with a 60-52 final score. Sophomore guard Kate Littlejohn, who transferred from Roanoke to Lynchburg this season, scored 13 points in that affair.

Through 16 games, the Hornets have three performers averaging double-figure scoring: senior guard Olivia Harris (11.3 points per game), junior forward Bree Spainhour (10.5 ppg.) and Littlejohn (10.1 ppg.). Spainhour has a total of 19 blocks in 13 games played this season for an average of 1.5 per outing, tied for the fourth-best mark in the ODAC.

As a team, Lynchburg ranks inside the top three in the conference in both 3-point percentage (.286 percent; third) and opponent 3-point percentage (.231 percent; second). The squad averages the most made 3-pointers per game in the ODAC at 6.9 per contest.

Roanoke's top scorer this season has been Paige Breuer, who averages 11.4 points per game, the 14th highest mark in the conference. Breuer has the best free throw percentage in the ODAC, having made 52-of-57 (.912 percent) from the charity stripe. Mariah Cain grabs a team-best 7.2 rebounds per affair, which ranks 11th in the ODAC this season.

Following this midweek matchup, the Hornets hit the road to take on Guilford on Saturday, February 1 at 2 p.m.
