Harrisonburg, Va. -- The Hornets picked up their first road win of the season tonight, 79-78 over EMU.
Michael Gray scored a team-high 20 points in his fifth consecutive game with double figures, while shooting five-for-nine from three. Right behind Gray, freshman forward
Jamarcus Brown contributed 17 points along with two steals and seven rebounds.
Jonathan Foust also played crucial minutes for the Hornets and added 13 points, seven rebounds, two steals, and four assists.
The Hornets came out swinging in the first half, controlling the interior and pace of play. Lynchburg outscored the Royals 20-0 in the painted area through the first 20 minutes. After shooting 47% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc, along with holding EMU to just 27% from the floor, the Hornets took a 39-27 lead into the locker room.
The ensuing ten minutes of the next half was more of the same from the Hornets. Lynchburg jumped out to a 21-point advantage. But Eastern Mennonites then rapidly found their rhythm. The Royals began to connect on a series of three-pointers to help them quickly narrow the defecate. Kaleb Torrence led the way off the bench for EMU, scoring 31 points on the night. Torrence connected on nine of his 15 three-point attempts.
While the Royals began to knock down their shots, the Hornets also allowed EMU back into the game with a multitude of missed free throws. The Hornets finished the night 6-17 from the charity stripe, which included a 4-13 performance in the second half.
Nonetheless, Lynchburg escaped with a win and advanced to 8-5 (2-2) on the season. The Hornets will head to Shenandoah this Saturday, Jan. 11, for another game before returning to Turner.
