Salem, Va. --Â Junior midfielder
Morgan Oliver recorded two late goals in Lynchburg's midweek matchup against the Roanoke Maroons to push the Hornets towards a 2-0 victory.
Lynchburg (7-1-1) tabbed their sixth multi-goal victory in the last seven games along with notching their fourth clean sheet across the same frame.Â
The two sides began the contest in a stalemate through the first 45 minutes of action. In the first half, both parties combined for six shots on net, but the keepers played a massive role to keep the match a defensive affair. Kate Shepherd tallied four saves in the first half alone, as she went on to record a career-high seven on the night.
In the 65th minute, a brilliant pass laid out in front for Oliver gave her plenty of room to operate. The team's leading goal scorer worked from left to right and fired a shot from the center of the box that ricocheted off the right crossbar and into the cage for her fifth goal of the season, and third in consecutive matches.
Oliver struck once again in the 78th minute to seal the match for the Hornets. Zoe Villarreal delicately chipped a ball into the box from near midfield, landing at the feet of Oliver right on the doorstep. The Powhatan, Va. native quickly punched it across the goal line for her second career multi-goal performance.
Lynchburg extends their winning streak to three with the victory and stays unblemished in conference play, two games in. The Hornets will travel to Danville, Va. for a contest against the Averett Cougars (1-6-1) in their next match on Saturday, Oct. 4.
