No. 18 Men's Soccer Defeats Eastern Mennonite, 6-0

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team delivered an emphatic performance on Saturday afternoon, defeating Eastern Mennonite 6-0 at Shellenberger Field on Homecoming weekend.

Although the No. 18 Hornets (11-1-2, 5-1-0) were held scoreless for the first 40 minutes of action, they took control in the late stages of the first half and the entirety of the second half. Lynchburg outshot the Royals (6-4-5, 1-3-3) by a margin of 21-4 and holding 60 percent of possession to secure their 11th win of the season and fifth in conference play.

After a scoreless opening 40 minutes, Lynchburg broke through late in the first half when Kohlby Wilson chipped it over EMU netminder Andrew Arledge in the 43rd minute off a long ball from William Casey to send the Hornets into the break up 1-0. From there, Lynchburg's attack erupted in the second half. Saul Lopez Coreas doubled the advantage in the 54th minute after a combination with Carlos Andres Romero, and just over ten minutes later Sean DeLorenzo added his team-leading seventh goal of the season on an assist from Keaton Napior.

The Hornets continued to pour it on down the stretch. Chris Bovo found the net unassisted in the 82nd minute, followed shortly by a strike from Cristobal Massanet in the 86th. Nicholas Fitzgerald capped the scoring spree in the final minute, finishing a feed from Massanet for his second of the season.

Defensively, Thomas Viscuso earned the win in goal, playing nearly 80 minutes without facing a shot on target before Matthew Kopsidas closed out the final stretch in net. The back line anchored by Casey, Benjamin Velasquez, Isaac Torres, and Reid Rouse limited the Royals to just four total shots and one corner kick.

The Hornets will look to carry their momentum into the final stretch of the regular season as they continue their pursuit of a top conference seed, next taking on Roanoke on the road in Salem, Va. on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.
