Roanoke, Va. -- Following a first-half goal from
William Casey, the University of Lynchburg men's soccer team held on for a 1-0 victory over Roanoke on Wednesday evening at Donald J. Kerr Stadium.
The No. 23 Hornets (12-1-2, 6-1-0) controlled possession from the opening whistle, generating pressure on the offensive end and outshooting the Maroons (7-9-0, 1-6-0) by a margin of 25-7. Lynchburg broke through in the 29th minute when defender
William Casey controlled a ricochet off a defender inside the box and found the back of the net for what proved to be the game's only goal. The sophomore defender was active on both ends, finishing with three shots on goal and helping to anchor a back line that held Roanoke scoreless.
Lynchburg's defense was sharp throughout, limiting Roanoke to just two first-half shots and seven overall. Goalkeeper
Thomas Viscuso recorded three saves en route to his ninth shutout of the season.
Benjamin Velasquez and
Reid Rouse played all 90 minutes on the back line, helping to keep Roanoke's chances to a minimum.
The Hornets created six corner kicks compared to Roanoke's one, maintaining steady offensive momentum despite a strong performance from Roanoke goalkeeper Aidan McHugh, who totaled seven saves.
With the win, Lynchburg continues its impressive conference run and is in sole control of second place in the ODAC standings, just one point behind Washington and Lee for the top of the conference table. The Hornets look ahead to a crucial matchup against the Generals for ownership of the top spot in the ODAC on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 4 p.m. in Lexington, Va.
