Lynchburg, Va. – The University of Lynchburg women's soccer team dropped its Homecoming Saturday match against No. 9 Washington & Lee 1-0 on Shellenberger Field following a 26th-minute strike by the Generals' Elizabeth Zimmerman.
W&L outshot Lynchburg 15-7, though both teams directed six shots on-frame. The Hornets maintained 52 percent of the possession to W&L's 48 percent, and the hometown club earned a 7-5 corner-kick advantage.
The Generals fired the first eight shots of the game, including the presumptive game-winning goal by Zimmerman. From outside the top of the 18-yard box, Zimmerman tapped the ball past Lune DenHartog to create an opening and rifled a shot beyond the reach of goalkeeper Kate Shepherd.
Both teams traded opportunities throughout the remainder of the first half, though neither club converted its chances. The Hornets tallied six corner kicks, despite struggling to find the net.
Lynchburg earned a large share of possession in the second half, including several opportunities to equalize the scoreline.
Rylee Wampler's shot in the 57th minute forced a top-shelf save from Generals keeper Kate McEnroe, who made six saves in the winning effort. Later in the half, the Hornets created a two-on-one breakaway opportunity when Hannah Phillips surged from the wing, though the pass intended for McKayla Hargrove sailed past the Hornets forward.
Lynchburg fired three shots in the second half, though the Hornets were unable to tie the game. The 1-0 defeat marked the Hornets' third consecutive loss, each by a one-goal margin.
The Generals tallied their 10th clean sheet and sixth straight shutout in ODAC play. Following Saturday's match, Lynchburg occupied seventh place in the ODAC standings with 10 points.
On Wednesday, Oct. 22, Lynchburg travels to Guilford for a 7:00 p.m. contest under the lights at Appenzeller Field.
