Hornets and Eagles Battle to Physical 0-0 Draw

Lynchburg, Va. – The University of Lynchburg women's soccer team used physical, defensive play to earn a 0-0 draw against Mary Washington in the team's regular-season home finale.

While the Eagles outshot the Hornets 11-2, both of Lynchburg's opportunities narrowly missed the frame. Lynchburg also netted a well-positioned cross off a corner kick, though the referee signaled a foul before the shot occurred.

Kate Shepherd tallied eight saves to register the team's 10th clean sheet of the season. The Hornets posted five shutouts on their home turf, including clean sheets in their first four matches at Shellenberger Field this season.

The first 24 minutes of action featured just two combined shots, and neither team earned a possession advantage. Mary Washington earned four corner kicks in the first 45 minutes, though the team's strongest chances arrived in the run of play.

Ava Olson fired Lynchburg's lone chance of the first half in the 18th minute. From outside the 18-yard box, Olson lasered the shot just feet above the crossbar while the goalkeeper was out of position.

Mary Washington owned a 7-1 shot advantage in the second half, but Lynchburg posed several problems for the Eagles' defense in the final 20 minutes.

In the 81st minute, Sammie Rogstad inserted a cross that ricocheted through several layers of the opposing back line. Oliver received the ball directly in front of the keeper, though the shot missed the frame wide.

Despite an accelerated pace throughout the final 10 minutes, the match ended in a scoreless draw. The referees issued three yellow cards throughout the game, including one to each head coach. Each team committed 11 fouls in the nonconference affair.

Lynchburg's overall record moves to 9-5-3 ahead of the team's final regular-season match at Hollins. With a win, Dr. Todd Olsen's squad will post 10 or more wins for the fifth consecutive season.

The Hornets face the Green & Gold on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 3:00 p.m. in Roanoke, Va. to officially decide the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament seeding.
