Lynchburg, Va. -- With its 10th shutout victory to close out the regular season, the University of Lynchburg men's soccer team claimed ownership of the number one seed in conference postseason tournament after taking down Shenandoah, 2-0, on a rainy night at Shellenberger Field.
The No. 12 Hornets (14-1-2, 8-1-0) earned the right to host throughout the conference playoffs for the second consecutive season with 24 table points and an ODAC-best eight wins against conference foes. Including tonight's triumph against the SU Hornets (5-9-4, 2-5-2), Lynchburg rattled off four straight clean-sheet wins to conclude the regular season en route to the top seed, scoring 11 goals in the process. Additionally, tonight's victory solidified that for the second year in a row, the Hornets propelled past the regular season without a loss on the home pitch, this time with seven wins and no draws.
After a scoreless first half that saw just four combined shots between the Lynchburg and Shenandoah, the Hill City squad came out of the halftime intermission with aggression on the offensive end.
Keaton Napior fired a shot on goal less than one minute into the contest, then scored the first goal of the outing in emphatic fashion in the 49th minute. From the wing,
Bruno Rihl Silva delivered a ball to Napior in the middle of the field about 35 yards out from the goal, which the senior lifted into the air and sailed it into the back of the net just below the crossbar.
Nearly 18 minutes later in the 66th minute,
Kohlby Wilson applied pressure on the offensive half, snagging the ball from the feet of a SU defender around the top of the box and sending it with force past the keeper for the game-sealing score. With Wilson's goal, Lynchburg improved to 4-0 in games in which the team scored twice and 12-0 in competitions that saw two-or-more goals from the Hornets.
On a senior night to remember, Lynchburg set the stage for ODAC opponents to have to go through Shellenberger Field to advance in the postseason. The Hornets are set to take on eighth-seeded Eastern Mennonite on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 6 p.m., a team that Lynchburg defeated 6-0 just two and a half weeks ago.
