Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team cruised past Eastern Mennonite in the ODAC Quarterfinal round with a 4-1 finish on Saturday night at Shellenberger Field to advance to the semifinal stage.
The Hornets wasted little time setting the tone, piling up 17 first-half shots and earning five corners in the opening 45 minutes.
Carlos Andres Romero opened the scoring in the 21st minute, finishing off a long ball from
Benjamin Velasquez to give Lynchburg a one-goal edge. Moments later,
Izaack Cruz doubled the advantage in the 33rd minute when he tucked away a setup from
Sean DeLorenzo, giving Lynchburg full control of the match.
Eastern Mennonite benefited from an own-goal by the Hornets late in the half to cut the margin to 2–1, but Lynchburg's pressure continued relentlessly after the break. The Hornets outshot the Royals 31-2 overall and held an 11-3 edge in corners, keeping the Royals from finding any momentum in their offensive unit.
Saul Lopez Coreas restored the two-goal cushion in the 68th minute with a composed finish, his fifth shot on goal of the night.
Chris Wiley capped the scoring in the 82nd minute, slotting home a feed from
Reid Rouse to seal the 4-1 victory.
Wiley, Lopez Coreas, and Romero each found the scoresheet, while Rouse and Wilson added assists to highlight a balanced offensive display. Goalkeeper
Thomas Viscuso faced just two shots on the night and made a leaping save in the win as Lynchburg's defense limited EMU's chances.
The Hornets claim their fifth straight victory and their 15th win of the season while keeping an unblemished 8-0 record at home. Lynchburg now prepares for a bout against fourth-seeded Bridgewater at Shellenberger Field on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at a to-be-determined time.
