Hornets Fall To Generals On The Road, 67-54

Box Score Lexington, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team battled through a competitive first half but could not overcome a strong third quarter from Washington and Lee, falling 67-54 on the road Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets (4-1, 0-1) had their four-game winning streak broken following tonight's result. Lynchburg opened the game with sharp energy on both ends, shooting .400 percent in the first quarter and building a 20-16 lead after 10 minutes. Audra Petty set the tone early, scoring seven points in the opening frame, while the Hornets controlled the glass with 15 first-quarter rebounds, including seven on the offensive end.

The Hornets continued to generate quality looks in the second quarter, but shots were not falling as often as Lynchburg made 4-for-19 from the field. Petty remained steady, reaching 12 first-half points, and Caitlin Canada gave Lynchburg a boost on the boards with 10 rebounds before halftime. Still, Washington and Lee closed the period on a seven-point run to take a 31-29 lead into the break.

Lynchburg worked to regain momentum out of halftime, but Washington and Lee put together its strongest stretch of the day in the third quarter, outscoring the Hornets 22-11 in the period. The Hornets continued to compete deep into the fourth quarter, but could not overcome the deficit.

Petty led the offensive effort with 21 points, her third game this season scoring over 20. Bree Spainhour was the next top scorer for the Hornets with seven points, while nine total Lynchburg performers tallied a basket in tonight's contest. Despite the setback, Lynchburg showed strength on the glass with a 53-44 rebounding advantage and 28 points in the paint.

The women's basketball crew will return to action next weekend when Meredith visits Turner Gymnasium on Sunday, Nov. 30 at 2 p.m.
