Lynchburg Outlasts Monarchs in 72–70 Battle

Box Score

Fayetteville, N.C. --  The University of Lynchburg men's basketball team held off a late push from Methodist to earn a gritty 72–70 road win on Saturday evening, Nov. 30.

The Hornets (4–3) were powered by a dominant performance from sophomore forward Jamarcus Brown, who posted a 20-point, 12-rebound double-double while shooting 8-of-13 from the field. Four of Brown's rebounds came on the offensive glass, as he tied his season-best mark on the boards en route to his third double-double in four games.

Elijah Thomas supplied 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting, including his first three-pointer of the year. He also corralled nine rebounds and recorded two steals in his 18 minutes of action. Jesse Mitchell added 14 points and five rebounds, while Piercen Young continued his efficient play with seven points, four rebounds, and three steals.

Young played a crucial role in the early stages of the contest, helping the Hornets establish a lead. The veteran guard buried a layup to trim the Monarchs' (2–4) early advantage, then assisted on the next three Lynchburg baskets. A Thomas three-pointer and a handful of free throws sparked a 14–0 run as Lynchburg seized control in the opening seven minutes.

Lynchburg controlled the boards throughout, finishing with a 44–33 rebounding advantage and outscoring the Monarchs 38–28 in the paint. The Hornets also forced 16 turnovers, converting them into timely baskets during a decisive first-half stretch that led to a 39–30 halftime advantage.

Methodist fought back behind a standout 25-point effort from Tre Williams, who shot 8-of-16 from the floor and knocked down three triples. The Monarchs outscored Lynchburg 40–33 in the second half and cut the deficit to one possession multiple times down the stretch. A late layup from Tomas Stevens with 1:11 left pulled Methodist within two, but the Hornets' defense held firm on the final possession to secure the win.

Lynchburg shot 44.6 percent from the floor and 66.7 percent at the line, while Methodist finished at 39 percent overall but kept the game close by going 20-of-29 at the stripe.

The Hornets return to Lynchburg for their first ODAC matchup of the year against cross-town rival Randolph on Wednesday, Dec. 3.
