COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --Â The University of Lynchburg field hockey team had five student-athletes named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-Region Teams, announced Wednesday, Dec. 3.
Three Hornets were named to the All-Region VI First Team: Allie Freeman, Anna Dorrestijn, and Khanyisile Mzizi, while two earned spots on the Second Team: Danielle Coon and Olivia Muir.
Mzizi earned her third consecutive NFHCA First Team All-Region nod in as many years with the Hornets. The Zimbabwe native led Lynchburg in scoring during the NCAA Tournament, notching two goals and two assists—accounting for every score in Lynchburg's two contests. The junior midfielder received an All-ODAC First Team selection after anchoring the midfield with lockdown defense and adding four assists and two goals during the regular season.
Freeman earned the recognition after a strong junior campaign. The Yorktown, Va., native recorded 13 assists, the third-most in the ODAC, along with six goals, including seven assists over the final four games of the regular season. This is the second consecutive season Freeman has been named to an NFHCA All-Region Team, but it marks her debut appearance on the First Team.
Dorrestijn finished the season as the ODAC leader in shots on goal (56), goals (21), and points (56). She also ranked second in the conference with 14 assists. The Netherlands native tallied four hat tricks this season—two of which came in the opening half—and set a career high with five goals on Senior Day against Eastern Mennonite, tying the second-most goals scored in a single game in program history. Dorrestijn earned three Offensive Player of the Week awards throughout the season. She adds this honor to her list of accomplishments this year as the ODAC Offensive Player of the Year.
Coon picked up her first All-Region honor after ranking second on the team in both goals (13) and points (32), finishing inside the conference's top five in each category. She closed the year tied for the team lead in game-winners with three. The senior forward also received her first All-ODAC selection this season, earning a spot on the First Team as well.
Muir made her first appearance on the All-Region list after three consecutive seasons with All-ODAC honors. The senior defender anchored a back line that posted eight shutouts and allowed just 1.05 goals per game. Muir also made her mark on the offensive end this year with a career-best two goals and one assist, all of which came in a two-game span.
