Rocky Mount, N.C. -- The Lynchburg baseball squad got its season underway with three consecutive wins over North Carolina Wesleyan: 4-3, 2-0, and 12-11.
The Hornets began the weekend with a doubleheader against the Bishops. Still scoreless in the top of the sixth inning, Ben Jones flew out to left field for an RBI, allowing
Logan Webster to score.
Tyler Kaltreider dominated on the mound through the first seven innings. Kaltreider tallied eight strikeouts and allowed one hit through his 22 batters faced.
Colin McGuire closed out the final two innings for the Hornets, recording three strikeouts and just one walk.
Jones would score on an error in the top of the ninth, and the Hornets sealed a 2-0 victory.
The second matchup began similarly, the first run came in the top of the sixth inning.
Quinn Madden broke the ice for the Hornets, scoring on a passed ball to take the lead. However, the Bishops would respond in the bottom of the seventh. Jacob Trivette doubled to center field, scoring two runs.
In the top of the ninth inning, trailing by a run, the Hornets' bats caught fire. With two runners on,
Brandon Garcia singled to left field, allowing Pasker Cato to advance to third and
Ethan Smith to score and tie up the contest. Madden then doubled to left center, bringing Garcia and Cato home.
The Bishops would earn a run in the bottom of the inning, but Lynchburg would hold them off for a 4-3 victory.
In the final game of the weekend, it was all offense for both sides. The top of the first inning began with the first six batters being walked. Lynchburg took a 5-0 lead midway through the top of the first without recording a hit.
Bryce Demory closed out the seven-run inning with a two-run homer.
N.C. Wesleyan kept the contest competitive with a flurry of hits in the bottom of the fifth, helping earn five runs in the frame. Nevertheless, Lynchburg continued to pile on the runs to secure the victory.
Lynchburg will stay on the road for their next game in Greensboro, N.C. for the D3 Showcase Tournament, starting Friday, Feb. 21.
