Top-15 Showdown Ends With No. 9 Lynchburg On Top

Greensboro, N.C. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team notched its fourth straight win of the season against a strong Cortland side, 2-1, to kick off the D3 Showcase Tournament on Saturday night at First National Bank Field.

The No. 9 Hornets (4-0) trailed by one after the top of the first inning, but retaliated with two runs in the bottom of the second and held onto the slight edge for the remainder of the contest. Sean Pokorak and Joe Munitz each scored runs to put Lynchburg ahead.

After Pokorak was walked to start the bottom of the second, Munitz followed with a bunt that allowed him to reach first thanks to a throwing error by the pitcher. Pokorak advanced to second on Munitz's bunt. With two on and one out, Eric Hiett worked a walk, further loading the bases, while Munitz and Pokorak advanced to second and third, respectively.

Parker Cato then stepped up to the plate and drew a walk of his own, bringing in an unearned run as Pokorak crossed the plate. The bases remained loaded as Hiett moved to second, Munitz to third, and Cato to first.

Logan Webster hit a sharp liner to left, but it was snagged for the second out. Brandon Garcia reached base on a fielding error by the shortstop, allowing both Cato and Hiett to move into scoring position and Munitz to score an unearned run, effectively taking the lead that would hold for the remainder of the outing.

Tyler Kaltreider pitched five complete innings, allowing two hits and striking out six batters of 19 faced. Colin McGuire came in to start the sixth inning and finished out the contest, allowing just one hit and throwing six strikeouts of the 15 batters faced. Pokorak and Hiett had 12 and 11 putouts, respectively.

Lynchburg goes back to work tomorrow morning against Marietta at 11 a.m. Links for the game can be found on the lynchburgsports.com baseball schedule page.
