Blacksburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg equestrian team earned first place on the second day of the Virginia Tech IHSA Show this past weekend and second place on the first day of the event.
The Hornets returned to IHSA action for the second time in 2025, claiming 28 total points on the first day of the show and 36 points on the last day of competition. Washington & Lee took first on the 15th and second on the 16th, while the third place team for Saturday and Sunday was Hollins.Â
Freshman Mckenzie Burch topped the leaderboard on the first day in the Limit Fences and was the sole Lynchburg performer to place first on Saturday. Seniors
Margaret Stell and
Lucy Metzler snagged second in the Open Fences A and Open Flat, respectively. Junior
Ava Jackson placed second as well in the Limit Flat B.
Junior
Elle Nutting and sophomore
Alexandra Miller each took third place in their events, Nutting in the Intermediate Flat B and Miller in the Novice Flat B. Metzler placed fourth in the Open Fences B. Freshmen
Natalie Holdren and
Ruby Suess both were tabbed fifth in the Limit Flat A and Novice Flat A, respectively. Sophomore
Carlie Madonna rounded out Lynchburg performers on Saturday with a sixth-place finish in the Intermediate Flat A.
On Sunday, the Hornets beat out the Generals for first place by a total of six points and had six athletes top their competition. The six who took the top spot were juniors Zoe Horn and
Victoria Riordan, as well as Nutting, Suess, Jackson, and Metzler.
Horn got first in the Intermediate Fences B, Riordan took first in the Novice Flat A, Nutting claimed first in the Intermediate Flat A, Suess was first in the Limit Flat A, Jackson earned first in the Limit Flat B, and Metzler tabbed first in the Open Flat B.
Metzler also got sixth in the Open Fences, while Madonna claimed fifth in the Intermediate Flat B and Burch took sixth in the Limit Fences.
After two first-place finishes this weekend, the Lynchburg IHSA squad returns to competition on Saturday, February 22 for the Hollins IHSAÂ show.
