Lynchburg, Va. -- Fighting through disastrously rainy conditions, the University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team was outed by Gettysburg, 16-9, on Saturday afternoon at Shellenberger Field.
The No. 12/13 Hornets (0-1) started off the season with a top-20 battle in cold and rainy weather. The skies poured down onto the field throughout the contest and did not waver, making the competition a tough start to the 2025 campaign. The No. 19/17 Bullets got the best of Lynchburg, using a six-goal run between the first two quarters to take a six-goal advantage and eventually secure their first with of the season.
Stokes Myers netter the first goal of the affair 2:25 into the contest, grabbing an early lead. The Hornets saw
Jake Rust and
Liam Holman score back-to-back goals in response to take the edge with 9:58 left in the first period. After Jack Dunleavy and
Brodie Mason traded goals within a 40-second span, Gettysburg finished the quarter with two more, taking a 4-3 lead after 15 minutes.
Gettysburg extended its advantage with five consecutive goals in the second quarter, which Jackson Barroll scored two of and assisted on one. The Hornets got one back with 32 seconds left before the halftime intermission as Mason found
Kayden Hinchey, making the scored 9-4 heading into the halftime break. GC held Lynchburg scoreless for a total of 19:48 across the first and second periods.
From then on, the squads traded goals until Lynchburg netted two straight from Van Tagnuay and
Jake Rust at the 6:55 and 4:39 marks in the third quarter, respectively. The Bullets held the Hornets to just one more goal for the rest of the outing while adding four more to their total.
Each keeper had nine saves today, but Gettysburg outshot Lynchburg by a margin of 35-29. Although the Hornets scooped up 51 ground balls to GC's 28 and won 20-of-28 faceoffs, the squad was unable to come away with the win.Â
Next up for Lynchburg is another home bout against Pfeiffer next weekend on Saturday, February 22 at 1 p.m.
