Lynchburg, Va. -- Seven performers for the University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team tallied multipoint games in a 21-12 victory against Pfeiffer on Saturday afternoon at Shellenberger Field.
The No. 17/17 Hornets (1-1) saw four athletes notch hat tricks in today's affair: fifth year midfielder
Jake Rust, sophomore midfielder
Liam Holman, sophomore attackman
Riley Hastings and senior attackman
Charlie Evans. Rust added one assist for four total points. Although many Lynchburg performers had outstanding production, it was fifth year midfielder
Grant Voigt who led the team in points with a career-best four assists and one goal for five points.Â
Hastings started off the scoring with a solo goal just 1:14 into the contest. The Falcons answered as Zach Gignac got them on the board at the 12:55-mark. After two Lynchburg goals from junior attackman
Spencer Vandenberg and Hastings, Pfeiffer went on a run of three straight to take a 4-3 advantage with 2:21 left in the first quarter. Sophomore midfielder
Andrew Beal knotted the score at 4-4 with 1:44 left in the first period.Â
With a 6-5 advantage and 10 minutes left in the first half, the Hornets rung off six consecutive goals in a stretch of just 5:22 to storm in front, taking an 11-6 lead with 4:34 left on the clock. Following two goals from the Falcons and one from Holman, Lynchburg owned a 12-8 edge heading into the halftime intermission.
The third quarter was all Hornets as they scored six goals without allowing any. Lynchburg opened the fourth period by having Voigt find Evans for a seventh straight goal, capping off a run that gave the Hornets a 19-8 lead with 12:57 remaining in the contest. From the end of the second quarter until Dylan Sullivan snapped the Falcons' scoring drought with 11:06 to go in the fourth quarter, Lynchburg held Pfeiffer scoreless for 19:44.Â
That long span of Lynchburg goals put the game out of reach for the Falcons, allowing the Hornets to coast to a 21-12 triumph.
The men's lacrosse crew will host its third straight home game when No. 3/2 Salisbury visits Shellenberger Field on Saturday, March 1 at 1 p.m.
