Greensboro, N.C. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team outlasted Marietta, 4-3, on the second day of the D3 Showcase Sunday afternoon at First National Bank Field.
The Hornets (5-0) extend their win streak to five straight to begin the 2025 campaign. Today's contest began with scoreless innings for both teams in the first, with Lynchburg going down in order and Marietta failing to bring anyone home after a hit-by-pitch followed by a Hornet double-play.
Lynchburg broke through in the top of the second as
Joe Munitz was walked, eventually advanced to third and had
Parker Cato drive him in with a single to third. Cato was caught stealing second, and the inning ended with Lynchburg holding a 1-0 lead.
Marietta responded in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run by Drew McKenna, tying the game at 1-1. Lynchburg regained the lead in the top of the sixth when
Benton Jones homered to right field. The Hornets then added two more in the seventh, thanks to a two-RBI single from Munitz that scored Jones and
Eric Hiett, pushing Lynchburg's lead to 4-2.
Marietta mounted a late rally in the bottom of the ninth, as Cael Magill doubled and McKenna reached on a dropped fly ball, allowing Magill to score. However, Marietta's final chance ended when Shane Rothlisberger struck out and Lynchburg secured the 4-3 win.
Lynchburg's pitching staff held strong as
Nick Mattfield threw 6.1 innings, allowing three hits and striking out five batters of 19 faced.
Brock Duff came in relief with the save, throwing 2.2 innings while allowing two hits and three strikeouts.Â
The final day of the D3 Showcase will see Lynchburg square off against No. 5 Denison on Monday, February 24 at 1 p.m.
