Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse team had another top-20 battle against a notoriously strong program in Salisbury and was defeatedin what turned out to be a game of runs, 18-13, on Saturday afternoon at Shellenberger field.
The No. 18 Hornets (1-2) had their second matchup against a top-25 nationally ranked opponent today, this time against a multi-time national championship winning program in the No. 3/2 Seagulls. Although Lynchburg held with Salisbury through the last three quarters, a quick 4-0 advantage for the Seagulls was too much to overcome and ultimately resulted in Salisbury's fifth straight win to start the season.
Following four minutes of scoreless ball, Salisbury got on the board first at the 10:26-mark with a solo goal from Brice Bromwell. The Seagulls netted three more before the Hornets were able to slot one past the keeper. Salisbury's lead held for the entirety of the contest following its four-goal run to open the contest.
Sophomore midfielder
Liam Holman netted Lynchburg's first goal of the affair with 1:18 left in the first period. The Seagulls responded with another run of four consecutive goals, which increased their lead to 8-1 with 10:12 left in the first half. The Hornets closed out the half without allowing any more scores from SU and bagging three of their own, shortening the gap to 8-4 heading into the halftime intermission.Â
Out of the break, Salisbury strung together the largest goal streak of the outing with six unanswered in a 5:48-span. With 8:32 to go in the third quarter, the Hornets trailed by double digits, 14-4. Lynchburg rallied with a 6-1 run to end the third quarter, but was unable to score again until the 6:54-mark in the fourth quarter, making the score 16-11. The Hornets netted two more in the final minute of action, but that was not enough to surmount their deficit.
Holman had his second game of this young season with three-or-more goals, securing a hat trick in today's competition. Junior attackman
Riley Hastings also tallied three points with one goal and two apples. Fifth year midfielder
Grant Voigt and junior attack
Finn Schmidt notched multi-point performances with two goals apiece. Senior netminder
Andrew Miller had some stellar saves in today's game and stopped a career-best 14 shots against one of the best DIII offenses in the nation.
Bromwell totaled a game-best seven points on four goals and three assists for Salisbury. Connor Herraiz was close behind with six points on two goals and four assists, while Chris Wong accrued four of SU's 18 goals.
The Hornets hit the road for the first time this season to take a trip north to square off against RV Denison in Granville, Ohio on Sunday, March 9 at 1 p.m.
