Greensboro, N.C. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball squad had its five-game win streak snapped in a close loss to Denison, 4-2, in the final matchup of the D3 Showcase on Monday afternoon at First National Bank Field.
The game started in a scoreless stalemate through the first two innings, with both teams unable to capitalize on early opportunities. The No. 9 Hornets had a leadoff walk from
Benton Jones in the first and another in the fourth but were unable to break through. Meanwhile, No. 5 Denison went three-up, three-down in both the first and third innings.
Denison broke the deadlock in the second inning. After a single by Jack Steel, and a subsequent RBI single by Andrew Fazio, the Big Red took a 1-0 lead. They extended their advantage in the third when Erik Sundgren homered to left field, giving Denison a 2-0 lead.
The Hornets responded in the top of the sixth by knotting the score. Jones singled, followed by another single from
Jacob Wright. A wild pitch allowed both runners to advance, and a groundout by
Sean Pokorak brought Jones home.
Joe Munitz then grounded out to plate Wright, tying the game at 2-2.
Denison regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth. Sundgren and Eric Colaco reached base, and a sacrifice fly from Cade Nowik brought Sundgren home. After Colaco stole third and came in on a single by Cooper Marrs, the Big Red were back on top, 4-2. The Hornets tried to rally in the top of the ninth but were unable to break through against Denison's new pitcher, Manny Nager.
Next up for the Hornets is one more road trip to Fredericksburg, Va. to square off against Mary Washington for a midweek matchup on Wednesday, February 26 at 2:30 p.m.
