Fredericksburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball squad notched a midweek win against Mary Washington, 7-2, for its final contest of a seven-game road stand to start the season.
The No. 9 Hornets (6-1) played their fourth game in five days after returning from the D3 Showcase this past weekend, leaving Greensboro with a 2-1 overall record in the tournament, including a ranked win over No. 15 Cortland.
Lynchburg wasted no time getting on the scoreboard this afternoon with a two-run first inning. After a leadoff hit by pitch to
Brandon Garcia,
Eric Hiett and
Benton Jones both walked, setting up a two-RBI single by Gavin Collin that brought both Hiett and Jones home.
Mary Washington responded with a run in the second inning as Powell doubled to left-center to score Martinez, cutting Lynchburg's lead to 2-1. The Eagles leveled the score in the third as Roots doubled, scoring Martin. The Hornets answered in the sixth, putting up three runs to extend their lead to 5-2.
Joe Munitz drove in two runs with a single up the middle, and
Parker Cato later plated an unearned run on a left-field error.
Lynchburg added two more insurance runs in the eighth.
Benton Jones and
Sean Pokorak reached base, and Collin's second single of the game drove in Jones, followed by Cato's RBI groundout to bring in Pokorak.
On the mound, Lynchburg's pitching staff, led by
Davis Watson,
Ryan Allard, and
Brock Duff, kept Mary Washington at bay, with
Colin McGuire closing out the game. The Hornets' defense was solid, including a key double play in the bottom of the ninth to seal the win.
The baseball crew is set for its home opener in a double header against York on Saturday, March 1, starting at 11 a.m.
