Hornets Set To Square Off Against Cougars At Home

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team is set to return to Turner Gym for a midweek matchup against Averett on Wednesday, February 5 at 5 p.m.

The Hornets (6-12, 3-8) return to Wayne Proffitt Court after a road bout against Guilford in which Lynchburg fell, 82-52. In that matchup, junior forward Bree Spainhour paced the Hornets offensively with 13 points while guard Olivia Harris, a senior, and sophomore Kate Littlejohn added 12 points apiece.

Lynchburg looks to snap a six-game skid tomorrow when the team squares up against Averett. The Hornets have won each of the last four meetings with the Cougars, including both of the contests that they had last season. The most recent triumph was a commanding 90-58 Lynchburg win on Feb. 14, 2024. Since 2000, the Hornets own a 14-3 record in the series against the Cougars.

Averett comes into the game with a 3-17 overall record and a 1-10 record in conference play. The Cougars' lone ODAC win came on January 29 against Ferrum, 51-49. On the offensive end, Averett is led by freshman guard DaiShaundria Giggetts, who averages the third-most points per game in the conference at 15.7 per affair. She also tops the ODAC in steals per outing with an average of 3.5 per game, the only player in the conference to average over three steals per contest this season. As a squad, Averett is last in the ODAC in offensive and defensive production, averaging 54.3 points per game while allowing 71.6 opponent points per game.

Lynchburg ranks third in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage (.279 percent) this season and scores the second most threes per game at 6.6 per competition. Individually, Spainhour leads the squad in points per game (11.6 ppg.) and field goal percentage (.456 percent), which rank 14th and 10th in the ODAC, respectively. Harris also averages double-figure scoring with 11.3 points per game and leads the squad in assists with 43 dimes.

Following tomorrow's contest, the Hornets hit the road again to take on 21st-ranked Washington and Lee on Saturday, February 8 at 2 p.m.
